mental stability Peter has created enemies everywhere, and it comes back to haunt him when a former flame, Charlotte Doyle, has been found murdered Claiming his innocence, Peter is trying to uncover the culprit of this crime who is framing Peter Caine Once a Liar is interesting to me because it follows the point of view of a sociopath defense attorney, who is immediately unlikable, but is so interesting and multifaceted that you just can t wait to see what he says next I couldn t help but at times feel for the struggles that Peter went through during his journey for success He is a dark character, but also one that you can clearly see has had a lot of pain to get where he is today The author, A.F Brady, is a licensed mental health psychotherapist, and you can definitely see that her experience has allowed her to shape Peter s psyche just perfectly for our enjoyment It really is a clever feat to portay a character so realistically you really feel like you re in the mind of a mentally unhinged, evil, cruel human being This book is truly unputdownable if you re looking for a character study.I was slightly disappointed in Once a Liar because I had high hopes for it s originality Once I started the story, I was completely engrossed in the plot It seemed like an original thriller that was reminiscent of Kaira Rouda s Best Day Ever, but I was definitely misled at some points in the story The initial interest in Once a Liar faded as I ventured through the story, because the central conflict didn t even come to fruition until I was almost 70% done with the novel My interest peaked in the very beginning of the story, but by the end I was just exhausted All in all, I would recommend Once a Liar is you want a slower paced novel, an unreliable narrator, but also a light mystery that won t scare you up at night I m definitely curious to see what AF Brady has up her sleeve in the future flag 18 likesLike see review View 1 comment Jan 26, 2019 JuJu Julie rated book, it s easy to follow and suspenseful But on the other hand, the author builds up tension and you re left hanging at the end of the chapterugh It makes it very hard to find a stopping place I m constantly telling myself just one chapter There are so many words to describe Peter Caine liar, narcissist, heartless, callous, ruthlessI could go on, but I m sure you get the picture It s hard to feel any empathy for Peter We see the cold and uncaring side of his personality that he tries to disguise He s a self centered, egomaniac who thinks only of himself Most of the characters which are issues with the book was that the pacing of the back and forth from past to present seemed a bit repetitive and we really didn t get anywhere till the last quarter of the book Maybe we needed all that as Peter attempts to feign human emotions at the funeral of his ex wife He is dismissive of his caring girlfriend and clearly dreads the fact that his estranged 16 year old son will be coming to live with them It turns out that Peter was not always this way, evidenced in flashbacks to the time when he met the deceased woman and began his career Ashamed of his lackluster childhood, Peter has reinvented himself by creating a fabricated life story that allows him to assimilate into the upper echelons of NY society His ex wife just happened to be the daughter of his hero and mentor, a famous and ruthless defense lawyer Over time, Peter loses and of himself as he begins to adopt the attitudes and habits of his father in law In the present timeline, the consequences of his secret past and increasingly anti social and amoral behavior are coming to fruition, and Peter is accused of the murder of a long time rival DA s daughter The evidence piles up against him and even his closest associates don t believe in his innocence Even the reader may be suspicious of this character that repeatedly revels in his lack of a moral center The mystery of the murder concludes satisfyingly, but some of the plot elements are problematic Much of Peter s character is based on the idea of sociopathy as predisposed, triggered by a trauma, and potentially reversible by another significant event If left unaddressed, it can develop into psychopathy This is not how modern psychological theory describes these traits diagnosis is Antisocial Personality Disorder The women in the story are portrayed as unbelievably long suffering and patient with this man who seems to have no redeeming qualities and is emotionally abusive The clues for the mystery are a bit transparent and many will be able to spot them easily before the end, thereby ruining a pivotal twist In summary, Once a Liar is a passably decent thriller with some interesting plot elements that are sometimes overshadowed by characters that are too one dimensional to connect with the reader flag 1 likeLike see review View 2 comments Jan 18, 2019 Kathleen Gray rated it it was amazing Peter Caine is not a nice man Not at work and not guilt, or shame for any of his actions His life and career have been carefully constructed on a foundation of lies and the certainty that he deserves. When his ex wife, Julianne, dies, Jamie, the estranged son Peter gave up custody of and has no relationship with, comes to live with Peter and Claire, his current girlfriend Peter has been living with Claire for eight years while simultaneously having an on going affair with Charlie Charlotte , the step daughter of his arch nemesis, New York County DA Harrison Doyle In fact, it was his on and off affair with Charlie that broke up his marriage When Charlie is found murdered, the evidence increasingly seems to point to Peter s guilt. As the narrator of Once a Liar, Peter Caine is an intensely dislikeable character The story, through Peter s eyes, follows events from the past and present and offers insight into his character, or lack thereof Peter is a very well developed character, even as his integrity is increasingly in question and his sociopathy becomes progressively clear as the plot advances He is an unreliable narrator, but an honest one based on his point of view.Once a Liar is a well written novel, especially in terms of the character development of Peter Initially Brady doles out interesting insight into Peter s back story and character, which grips your attention, but then the pace of the novel slows for a bit in the middle Keep reading, however, because all the little insights will matter and the pace quickly picks up again The ending twist is great Some readers might guess parts of it, but probably not the complete picture This is a very satisfying thriller.Disclosure My review copy was courtesy of Park Row Bookstp shetreadssoftly 2019 0 flag Like see review Dec 30, 2018 Hannah rated it liked it of all the realizations we were waiting for It was a lot to throw in at the end I would ve rather read Juliette s letter than be told what it contained, and that bomb should ve been dropped a lot earlier in the story The thread that could ve unraveled the mystery of who killed Charlie was so obvious, and I have a hard time believing Peter, Sinan, and the Franks couldn t figure it out Sinan asked about Peter s suits several times Why did no one follow up on that I knew who the murderer was from the moment we got the witness statement It was irksome and unbelievable literally that no one else in the book couldn t figure it out Oh well Peter got what he deserved for killing poor Bruno 3.5 Thanks to Harper Collins, Park Row, and Edelweiss for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange
